Abstract

What objects are mobilized in the struggles for cultural recognition of ethnic, linguistic, political, professional, sexual or religious minority groups in Europe and the Mediterranean? The nomadic seminar Singular Things. Objects of Minorities in Europe and the Mediterranean, organized by Mucem and IDEMEC, brings together members of minority communities, social scientists and heritage professionals to study, through their material expressions and cultures, the choices and strategies that certain minority groups implement to represent their experiences of the world. The seminar promotes a double approach linking political analysis of heritage and material studies. It also invites participants to engage in collaboration between social science, conservation, and cultural activism. By setting each session in a different regional context, in association with UMIFREs and French schools, the seminar sets up an ambitious comparative approach in order to better grasp the modalities of minority heritage practices around the Mediterranean.
